Peppermint Oil Saga Continues
The school officials chose to view the oil as an "unregulated over-the-counter drug"; thus the suspension. It is now almost a month later and the saga continues. The school refuses to reverse their decision, or to remove the incident from her school record. According to her mother, Sara has become the object of gossip and negative banter in the community. Her parents are even considering enrolling her in a private school to help protect her innocence. Corrine Morton-Greiner, Sara's mother, reports that the family continues to attend church and activities in their town, but there is an underlying feeling of apprehension among some of their neighbors.
It's surprising that the school district has not researched the situation by now and found that peppermint oil is not a drug, and that is doesn't contain alcohol. They should be commended on their diligent efforts to fight the "war on drugs", but this does seem to be taking it a bit too far. Sara is not a child who has gotten in trouble in school -ever. Another complicating factor is that Sara has an educational disability. She has Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), which affords her certain rights within the school district.
Children with disabilities are afforded protection from discrimination within the school setting based on the educational law. For example, it is illegal to punish a child in the school setting for a behavior related to their disability (such as suspending a child who is emotionally disturbed for shouting at a teacher, or giving a child who can't understand school rules detention for breaking them). The same should hold true for a child such as Sara, who has ADD.
Individuals with ADD demonstrate impulsive behaviors, and even if Sara knew that it may not have been a good idea to share personal items with her classmates after they asked, she may have impulsively done it due to her condition. In that case, Sara should be afforded the rights that every other student with a disability has; specifically to not be punished for her disability. The Committee on Special Education has an obligation to uphold the educational law. My question is; where were they in all of this?
I welcome your feedback on this story. Please post a response if you would like to share your thoughts or feelings on this one.

Dear Mary,
Thank you for your continued support! I understand that there is so much going on in the world that our story is small compared to the suffering of so many in far more tragic circumstances. This odd event in our lives has brought about some very positive change. Rather than submit to anger and bitterness, we are seeking solutions. Sara will be attending a new school that is such a nurturing place and enjoys a fantastic academic reputation. Perhaps, this momentary conflict was the impetus we needed to look for a better fit for Sara. I believe that she will grow tremendously and find a great happiness that she has yet to experience in her academic history.
My son resists change, but we are reluctant to allow him to stay in our present school system for a variety of reasons. He is an innocent soul, although bright and insightful in his own way. He is a peacemaker, but I am concerned that his environment will eventually overwhelm him. There is a lot of corruption that is coming to the surface in our area, news pertaining to our Board of Education. I prayed for justice and transparency in our community. It seems as though these prayers are being answered. I want to shelter my son whose greatest desire is to do well and make it past every hurdle successfully. He is a remarkable young man and deserves an education that is more worthy of his dedication and perseverence. He needs to be in a place where goodness and talent are rewarded with appreciation and recognition.
I think that we are on the right path, but I strive to keep a positive mental outlook through all opposition and transition. Change is challenging, but it is how we push forward into our next incarnation and become that improved version of our former selves.
Thank you for all of your healing energy! Sara has felt it, too. We send our gratitude and support for your work. Peace to Haiti and all those who suffer in any part of our world! Mercy and strength to you all!

Corrie,
Congratulations for being able to see this from the "10,000 foot view", so to speak. You have the bigger picture and you are making the very best out of a difficult situation. Your family will definitely be ahead of the game in the long run! Keep in touch and keep up the good work.
Blessings,
Mary
