Priceless Presents for the Holidays

                                           Priceless Presents for the Holidays

The holiday season is in full swing and many of us are reexamining our patterns of gift giving. Whether you have been impacted by the economy and have less means for gift giving, or whether you simply wish to tread more lightly on the Earth and leave a smaller carbon footprint, you may be wondering how to give generous yet meaningful gifts this holiday season, while still having something left over.

When we understand gift giving through the lens of energy, we realize that gift giving is, in essence, an exchange of energy. We realize that we all have an unlimited supply of energy to tap into that we can then offer to others. This understanding frees us up to focus on the essence of giving, instead of mistakenly focusing on the monetary value of the gifts. Many gifts carry no price tag at all, yet are priceless. We all have the means to offer these type of gifts to others.

Consider the following "priceless presents"- which ones will you give this year?

The gift of time
. Spending time with friends and family, doing something that you love, creates memories that you will have for the rest of your lives.

The gift of helping. Offering a helping hand to someone in need can be a wonderful gift; no matter how simple the gesture. Hold the door open for someone or let that stressed-out driver get into your lane. Being generous will help you feel good about yourself, and you will be helping someone else as well.

The gift of presence. When you are interacting with someone, try to remain completely present to the experience. Becoming still, opening your heart, smiling, and making good eye contact during conversations will help the other person feel as if they have been truly heard.

The gift of empathy. Try to put yourself in another person's shoes and understand their situation for a moment. Empathizing with someone for even a short time can be so validating. It's amazing how good it feels to be understood.

The gift of gratitude. Expressing your gratitude to others may seem like a small thing but a sincere "thank you" can be a gift in itself. Thank someone for doing something that has been taken for granted and see what how much the energy shifts (for both of you)!

I would love to hear what you think about these priceless presents. If you have a comment, or an idea to add to the list, please post a comment to this blog.

Blessings,

Mary

I so agree with this sentiment, Mary! We all have too much stuff and not enough precious gifts of time or caring. Last year for our meditation group my husband and I decided to write a little card up for each member of our sangha, telling him or her what we appreciated about them most. Then each person read their card aloud to the group and others added their cooments. Wow! Powerful stuff. Many tears and hugs ensued. The theme of our sitting was gratitude and we all left feeling profoundly grateful to be part of a loving, mindful group of like minded spirits.
Wishing you and yours many blessings and peace this holiday season and for the new year.
    Metta, Linda

      Hi Cheryl,
You're welcome. Tony said the same thing and wondered why I couldn't
practice what I preached more (lol). Hope your holidays are happy!
      Blessings,
      Mary
